As part of the APA’s industry partnership with the Marketing Procurement IQ Conference, the panel “Production Unplugged: The Maker Advantage - Empowering Procurement through Direct Production Intelligence” featured in the Day 2 agenda.

The session was opened by Charlie Bettice, Head of Production at 4creative and a lead curator for the 2025 Production Unplugged initiative. Bringing the “brand-side” perspective, Charlie offered unique insight into how direct maker engagement could transform the bottom line. Janet Markwick, Co-founder of J&R Collective, chaired the panel, ensuring a sharp and objective focus on the intersection of creative excellence and business ROI.

The APA’s 2025 Production Unplugged initiative marked a strategic turning point for the industry. It was born from a data-driven desire to meet the evolving needs of brands, fuelled by the APA’s 2024 report, “What clients want from advertising today and how they can get it.” Based on insights from 27 senior marketing and procurement leaders across the UK and EMEA, the takeaway for the industry was clear: marketers and procurement professionals were looking for a closer, more transparent relationship with the “makers”.

The panel was designed to help procurement professionals bridge the gap between high-level marketing strategy and technical execution. It provided an opportunity to move closer to the craft, shifting the focus from cost to value orchestration.

Evidence in Action: The Strategic Maker Model

The panel featured four distinct case studies, each demonstrating how direct collaboration could foster the transparency and agility needed to drive creative effectiveness and maximise marketing efficiency:

  • Imagine This | The AI Frontier: Explored how human craft, in collaboration with AI, could unlock new creative possibilities, facilitate agile production and maintain brand integrity.
  • NM Productions | Global Consolidation & Smarter Deployment: Demonstrated how consolidated scale, smart and auditable spend, and reduced regional risk could support more efficient global production.
  • Stamp – In House | The Embedded Model: Examined how an embedded model could address procurement’s need for accountability while supporting marketing’s creative ambition.
  • Pitch & Sync | Music IP and Asset Ownership: Explored how ownership of music IP and assets could unlock brand value, reduce risk and create flexible rights models to support successful in-housing.
